This article is devoted to aspects of French secondary school teachers’ work that are rarely studied : those realised outside the classroom. Little known because of their invisibility, including at the institutional level, these practices are examined through an analysis of teachers’ daily work patterns, using a combination of different methods. The article outlines the difficulties involved in analysing activities characterized by relatively high levels of autonomy, and goes on to emphasize the importance of studying the ways in which teachers manage working space and time in these circumstances. Including these aspects of teachers’ work in an analysis of this profession in neccesary in order to understand teachers’ real workload and the skills they develop to handle it. The analysis also reveals the working of invisible gender inequalities.
