Résumé

Tropical cyclones are one of the most devastating natural catastrophes, affecting coastal communities all over the world. Throughout history, the severity and scope of these calamities' repercussions have remained extremely high. A suitable mapping technique is required for developing thorough risk assessments in order to plan for and mitigate future cyclone impacts on people, property, and the environment. Using remote sensing, field data, and spatial analysis at a local scale encompassing < 1500 km2, this work developed and tested a spatial multi- criteria strategy for mapping the risk levels of places to tropical cyclone effects. Three risk components were considered: vulnerability and exposure, hazard, and mitigation capability, together with their 17 related criteria. For each criterion, thematic raster map layers were created and weighted using a Fuzzy Analytical Hierarchy Process (Fuzzy AHP). Individual maps for each risk component were generated using a weighted overlay approach, and a risk map was created from them. The maps produced appropriately recognized the spatial extents and risk levels (very high, high, medium, low, and very low). Our initial findings suggest that this technique has the ability to assess risks from tropical storm impacts in affected nations by creating risk maps that policymakers and administrators may utilise.
