Observing multilingual digital discourse on a webpage dedicated to an endangered dialect of Northern Italy. The case of Valoc’

Résumé

This contribution provides important insights into the complex issue of interpreting a corpus of bilingual/trilingual digital discourse on the webpage: Vocabolär del Valoc’ de la Val Mäśen. This webpage is part of the VVV project, a lexicography and sociolinguistics project on Valoc’, a dialect spoken in Val Masino, lower Valtellina (Northern Italy), a valley with a population of ~1,000 inhabitants. Our research started in 2017 and is based on a previous study conducted in the 1960s and 1970s, by Mario Songini (Scetti & Salamino 2020). Our approach is related to both dialectology and sociolinguistics as we complete our study with observations and interviews among speakers of different ages, sexes and professions, to see how Valoc’ is still used and by whom. Moreover, our methodological approach allows us to observe how speakers of Valoc’ write on the webpage, proposing different multilingual alternatives. We link this to previous (socio)linguistic and Natural Language Processing (NLP) research on French digital discourse in text messages (Fairon et al. 2006, Fairon & Cougnon 2014, Cougnon 2015, Panckhurst et al. 2020), including emoji usage (Panckhurst & Frontini 2020). To conclude, this contribution allows us to reflect on how the new ‘global’ society may influence the process of transmission of this endangered dialect, which needs to be revitalized. The webpage was important in order to introduce Valoc’ as a vehicular language not only orally but also in written form. Finally, we address the importance of developing a dictionary in order to promote a unique norm of reference, as a way of preserving Valoc’ for the future.
