Face, Surface, Interface: Tattooing and the Space of Kinship

Stéphane Gros

Résumé

My main purpose in this paper is to discuss ideas about kinship and reproduction (continuity) and how they are expressed spatially. I will do so mainly through a discussion of the practice of tattooing: more specifically that of facial tattooing, an exclusive practice of women among the Drung who live in Southwest China (near the border with Myanmar and Tibet).
