Portals of fiction

Résumé

“Portals of fiction” is a critical tool that I borrow from Jasper Fforde’s novels. In this article, “Portals of fiction” are beginnings of fictions, which underline, complicate and thematize their own access. I present a tentative typology of reflexive beginnings, distinguishing three kinds of “portals”: I call the first “delay and doubling”, the second “overlapping” and the third “paradoxical”. Portals of fiction are highly meta-fictional, self-referential, and nearly always in some way paradoxical. My purpose is to highlight their functions. Are they borrowing, or rather underlying, or problematizing the difference between fact and fiction? What kind of reference (historical, auto biographical, pseudo-autobiographical, allegorical, meta-fictional is mainly involved in these devices? The aim of this article is twofold: drawing a diachronic perspective and claiming the relevance of ontology in current approaches of fictionality.
