Zoomorphic and annthropomorphic buckles and contacts of Eastern Baltic region with the Byzantine Empire in the Great Migration period
Зооморфные и антропоморфные пряжки и контакты Восточной Прибалтики с Византией в эпоху переселения народов
Résumé
The objects here considered are buckles with relief zoomorphic and anthropomorphic decoration
(late 5th – mid-6th century) indicating contacts between the eastern part of the Baltic Sea basin and the Eastern
Roman Empire during the later phase of the Great Migration period. These buckles directly or indirectly reflect
the connection between the Baltic region and Byzantine Empire and, perhaps, were introduced with the
appearance of the Scandinavians in the territory of the Empire. With the Byzantine-Baltic contacts, the spread
of the prestigious military fashion was possibly related and they can have been realised via Central Europe,
the famous ‘Amber Route’ and further on through the system of the circumBaltic riverine and sea routes.
