Optimization of the Synthetic Jet to improve aerodynamic efficiency of the Next Generation Civil Tilt Rotor Aircraft

Résumé

In the frame of the CleanSky2 project AFC4TR (Grant Agreement 886718), detailed studies are conducted on the use of Active Flow Control (AFC) on the Next Generation Civil Tilt Rotor (NGCTR) aircraft. This is fully in line with the mission of the Clean Aviation Joint Undertaking to develop disruptive new aircraft technologies to support the European Green Deal, and climate neutrality by 2050. The NGCTR is a novel aircraft concept combining the capabilities of vertical take-off and landing of a helicopter with the range and the speed of a fixed wing aircraft. Active Flow Control on the NGCTR is studied using so called Zero Net Mass Flux (ZNMF) devices. These devices are very small, and have low costs since they do not require external fluid supply or complex piping. Unsteady CFD simulations using (U)RANS modelling were firstly performed to identify critical flow regions over the NGCTR aircraft that could benefit from AFC. Separation zones appeared at the juncture between the wing and the nacelle. In the next step unsteady CFD simulations were made of the flow over the NGCTR aircraft using ZNMF devices at different locations along the chordwise direction with respect to the separation line. The study pointed out that the jet location was essential for the effectiveness of the flow control. Consequently, optimization studies are necessary to determine the optimal locations of the ZNMF devices as well as their parameter settings. Preliminary results of this optimization showed promising results, with an increase of the aerodynamic efficiency of the aircraft
