The perfective aspect marker jó 咗 in Cantonese Yue narratives

Résumé

Discourse factors are essential in determining the use of the perfective aspect marker jó in the Yue dialect of standard Hong Kong Cantonese. The first part of thsi paper focuses of the analysis of the perfective aspect jó with comparisons made to standard Mandarin Chinese LE (pǔtōnghuà) since both these aspect markers occur with high frequency in the spoken register. The aim is the ascertain the dgeree of functional isomorphism between Cantonese jó and Mandarin LE , despite the fact that they are not cognate. In the second and main part of this paper, I show that there is a discourse factor responsible for the occurrence of jó and make rerernce to studies on narrative discourse by Longacre (1983, 1985). The perfective aspect marker jó is used by speakers to code events which represent the episodic peak, that is, the ones the speaker considers to be the most discourse salient in the development of the story. I compare this explanation with the notion of foregrounding and backgrougnding for events adumbrated by Hopper (1979) and show that it is not applicable to the analysis of jó .
