Sounds and pictures of war: an incongruous relationship?
Due to the massive use of powerful and destructive weapons causing hitherto unparalleled trauma to combatants, the First World War made it necessary for artists to modernize the usual forms of battle depiction. How can we therefore visually translate the multiple sounds of the fighting universe? The article intends to reconsider the “incongruous” relationship between image and sound through the two modes of representation that are painting and photography.
