Producing metal jewellery during Aegean Prehistory: a matter of innovation, continuity and discontinuity

Between the end of the Neolithic and the beginning of the European Bronze Age, metallurgy emerged in the Aegean world. At first considered as an innovative technical process at the end of the 5th millennium, metalworking diversifies itself during the Minoan and the Mycenaean periods and is subject to various influences. The technological and morphostylitic studies of ornaments such as the “ring-idols” and headbands enable nowadays us to better understand those phenomenons and their modalities. The “ring idols” display a concave ring-shaped form, surmounted by an extension presenting one or several perforations. Typical of the 5th and the 4th millennia, they are mainly produced with metal (gold, silver, copper). The techniques identified for their production are innovating: hot or cold hammering, stamping or even cutting. The “ring idols” also attest to the primary work of silver, in the Peloponnese and the northern islands. Whether the Aegean world maintains a local method of production at the end of the Neolithic period, regional innovations are also identified. It testifies to a high disparity between the regions in the north of Greece, the south, and the Aegean islands. Similar techniques are used in the production of headbands. These head ornaments are revealing of a jewellery work that extends from the 3rd millennium to the 2nd millennium. The technological analysis of these artefacts has shown that their conception varies depending on the Aegean regions - continental Greece, Crete, and Cyclades - and on the period - Minoan or Mycenaean. These variations can be perceived in scales of materiality (gold, silver, copper), morphology (atypical, rectangular, biconvex), and ornamental techniques (repoussé, chasing, ajourné, stamping). A cross-approach of these two case studies demonstrates the usefulness of diachronic and supraregional work for this subject. This research claims that metalworking and jewellery have continuity during the Aegean Protohistory, while local particularisms are developing.
