De la philanthropia à la walâya : éléments de la politique de l’amitié en islam

Anoush Ganjipour

Résumé

This paper seeks to implement a new comparative approach between Greek and Islamic political thought by focusing on the development of a certain “politics of friendship” in both traditions. While comparative research in the field is often limited to examining the reception of Plato’s or Aristotle’s political philosophies by the falâsifa, the author bases his comparative approach on studying the similarities and differences one can notice between, on the one hand, the political thought developed within Neoplatonism and neo-Pythagoreanism during Late Antiquity and, on the other hand, the Islamic theological-political thought elaborated from the 12th century onward and following the so-called decline of Greek philosophy in the Muslim world. By confronting some premises sustaining the theological-political notions of philanthropia and walâya, the paper shows to what extent the relationship between the Greek and Islamic traditions could go beyond textual translations or historical exchanges so far documented between both intellectual traditions. Through his comparative analysis, the author finally aims to make it clear that, beyond such transmission networks one may identify between the two traditions, the walâya should be considered as a kind of “differential reply” provided by the Islamic tradition to the late antique idea of philanthropia.
