Diversity and diachronic change in the classifier system of Xianghua, Northwestern Hunan

Résumé

This paper mainly examines the usage and origin of three high-frequency classifiers pa41, lau13 and tiau13 in the unclassified Xianghua (Waxiang) language of Xiangxi prefecture in northwestern Hunan. The purpose of the article is to try to deduce the origin of the universal classifier pa41 corresponding to the Mandarin "ge". It also noted that the cognate of both lau13 and tiau13 is "tiao". These two quantifiers reflect the different historical levels of the Xianghua language with tiau13 probably being borrowed from the local lingua franca, Southwestern Mandarin. As far as the Chinese classifier system is concerned, this paper refers to Peyraube & Wiebusch (1993) who propose that the evolution of the Chinese classifier system has experienced a process of cyclic change from general to specific and then back to general.
