The re-enchanted universe of Iakovos of Nea Skete (19th c.). A Hesychast response to the Copernican revolution?

Résumé

Iakovos of Nea Skete is not a recognised theologian. A nostalgic of Byzantium, he nevertheless treated dogmatic, liturgical and cosmological questions in an original synthesis, composed in 1834 and in 1835 on Mount Athos: the 'Orthodox Confession'. In this very personal effort to renew Athonite monasticism, what importance did Iakovos of Nea Skete grant to Hesychasm? The paper focuses mainly on cosmological aspects inspired by Palamite theology, and on the way Iakovos uses them in order to resolve the violent crisis into which modernity and its new science have thrown him.
