The altar and door in the parish church of Saint-Pierre de Firminy-Vert
In his article "Regulatory lines" in L'Esprit Nouveau of 1921, Le Corbusier enunciated the primary geometry that structures and organizes the construction of the Primitive Hut. The gate of the enclosure and the access of the living space are perfectly aligned. According to the Primitive Temple depicted by Reinhold von Lichtenberg, so are the accesses of the enclosure, the sanctuary and the altar. A classic example faithfully reflected in the Temple of Jupiter in the Forum of Pompeii, which the architect visited during his Journey to the East. The parish church of Saint-Pierre de Firminy recovers this same mechanism fifty years later, emulating a situation initially tested by Le Corbusier in the unbuilt project for the church of Le Tremblay (1929). This text analyzes the evolution of the project through the 'architectural promenade' that links the door and the altar.
