L’inno a San Mercurio attribuito a Paolo Diacono (RH 11242)

Résumé

In 768 the relics of saint Mercurius were translated from Quintodecimum to the church of santa sofia in benevento on the initiative of the Lombard duke Arichis II. This event is celebrated by two Translationes in prose (BHL 5936 and 5937) and one hymn in rhythmical sapphic stanzas (RH 11242) sometimes ascribed to Paul the Deacon. This paper deals specifically with this hymn and reexamines the debated question of its authorship. The attribution to Paul the Deacon can be ruled out through internal elements (such as content, narrative technique, and some rhythmical features) and through a complete reexamination of the manuscript tradition (here carried out for the first time, with important results). Research on the sources of the hymn shows, moreover, that it cannot be earlier than the late 9th century. A comparison with other poetic works on saint Mercurius, and the general revival of the cult of this saint in the12th century (documented by literary and artistic sources), make it probable that RH 11242 dates to the same period. The textual analysis of the poem also permits to reconstruct the relationships between other texts of the hagiographic dossier on Mercurius. A critical edition of the hymn (based on a newly discovered manuscript) is provided in the appendix.
