Visual Exploration of Amedeo Modigliani’s Paintings: an Eye-Tracking Study

Résumé

Despite the multitude of elements, figurative or not, appearing in Modigliani’s paintings (chairs, windows, writings, textures), art historians are generally interested in the human figures represented in the artist’s paintings. Nevertheless, what does the spectator spontaneously look at and see when facing the works of Modigliani? What is the visual attraction of non-figurative elements in these compositions concerning their main subject? To answer these questions, Pablo Fontoura of CRAL proposes to use eye-tracking to study the general visual behavior in front of Modigliani canvases. Thus, we seek to contribute to understanding the painter’s productions, especially how certain material aspects of his works guide visual perception, and especially to understand how the public looks at his portraits.
