Farms, villas, and villages in late roman Sicily: a subregional approach to the landscape evolution

Résumé

This lecture addresses the evolution of the Sicilian rural landscape between the 3rd and 6th centuries AD, questioning the reasons that might trigger changes and resiliencies in human settlement patterns on a local scale. We will focus on three still debated issues: the crisis of minor sites during the 3rd century AD, the emergence of luxurious villas during the 4th century AD, and the emergence of large agricultural villages between the 5th and 6th centuries AD.
