Administering the County of Champagne in the 13th century: How Seals came to Symbolise the Social and Institutional Status of Local Administrators

Résumé

Beside the ‘great officers’ of the Court of Champagne, who participated in the government of the County principality by bringing to the Count their advice and help, the administration was provided by an important network of loyal subordinates. These ‘local administrators’ (bailiffs, provosts, mayors, gardes des foires) used a seal whose main function is to guarantee, before the rise of the ‘juridiction gracieuse’ in the years 1250, the reliability of the contracts (acts of sale, leases, donations, exchanges, etc.) of the subjects of the count and of the traders of the fairs of Champagne. The apparent iconographic monotony of the seals of these officials has long meant that they have received little attention. This lack of interest is unfortunate since they provide valuable information on the diplomatic practices in use at the time, reveal the iconographic biases of the sigillants, and document the geographical and social recruitment of these administrators and finally contribute to our perception of the arrangement and administrative management of the County under the government of the princes of the house of Blois Champagne in the thirteenth century.
