Low-Frequency Dimming Control for HID Lamps

Résumé

There is an increasing demand to maximize energy savings of lighting sources. While High- Intensity-Discharge (HID) lamps are inherently very efficient, many users would like to further increase the energy savings of HID lamps through dimming. This paper presents a two-stage electronic ballast for HID lamps based on an adjustable rectifier followed a full bridge inverter. It is able to offer input utility current shaping with low frequency square wave sources without accompanying acoustic resonance. Dimming control method by varying DC link voltage and Duty-cycle control are utilized in the designed ballast. Theoretical analysis and experimental results of prototype ballast for 400W HID lamp are presented. They show the efficiency of the DC link voltage method compared to the other method for the energy saving while preserving all lighting requirement and gives a stable high-efficient lighting output.
