“Between Leisure and Virtues”: The Roman Cantata and the Villeggiatura
Résumé
The main objective of this essay is to focus on the dualism between the city and the countryside by looking at the Roman villeggiatura (the traditional retreat to the countryside during spring and/or autumn) during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries from a poetic and musical point of view. In evaluating this period of residency outside the urban space, emphasis will be placed on how musical practice and musical genres such as the chamber cantata function as a mirror of the social and cultural meanings contained in this kind of temporary retreat from urban life, thus helping to highlight the complexity of the city/country dialectic.
