Art and social science: anger, reflections, and possibilities

Résumé

There has been a trend for social scientists to present research results in art forms such as dance, photography or painting, with claims that more expressivity, relevance or authenticity can hereby be achieved. In this article we examine what seems to us to be 'art envy' and claim that the actual 'work of art work' is often grueling, hyper-competitive and profoundly commercialized. Art can attempt to engender singular experiences of relatedness grounded in pluralities of experience, craftmanship and uses of materials, but the complexities and challenges hereof must not be underestimated.
