How Art and Nature give Birth to Landscape
Comment art et nature engendrent le paysage
Résumé
If landscape painting appears in Europe as a means of understanding and appropriating the world, in China, it is tantamount to "fulfilling one's spirit". In either case, painting or composing a landscape implies confronting the need to make choices, to prioritise natural elements in order to either show them in their infinite variety while constituting an ordered world, tending towards the rational in Europe, or to arrange them in an organic whole that functions by analogy as a cosmic whole in China. On the one hand, the art of making landscapes humanises nature by ordering it, on the other hand, it normalises it. This process also includes a specific theorisation, which painters and philosophers have engaged in.
