Les ciels (et ce qu’il y a au dessous): la candidature au Patrimoine mondial de l’Astronomie UNESCO comme proposition de développement territorial pour la vallée Grana (Italie)
Résumé
Located on the Italian side of the Western Alps, the Upper Grana valley is the historic place of production of «Castelmagno», a cheese that was commercially successful in the 19th century but seemed doomed to disappear due to the demographic decline affecting this area (as well as other neighboring Alpine territories) in the following century. However, thanks to a local initiative, this cheese was awarded the “designation of origin” in 1983. In the same valley, the “La Cevitou” cultural association opened the “Terra del Castelmagno Ecomuseum” in 2007 which, from its very name on, stresses the need to consider the development of the valley as a whole while involving local people and local institutions beyond the original product itself.
The Ecomuseum has recently decided to support the application of the upper valley for Heritage of Astronomy UNESCO status, in order to protect one of the last “dark sky” strongholds against lightpollution in the Western Alps. The communication therefore outlined the application elements of the Western Alpine and Grana Valley Sky Sanctuary. In particular, it has showed how this UNESCO label will allow the Grana valley to become an astro-tourism hub for the Western Alps, giving it a new attractiveness while offering other perspectives for local development (starting with scientific dissemination and environmental education).
