Les combattants nordiques médiévaux dans l’historiographie des années 1920 aux années 2020

When we think of the fighting figures of the medieval North, the Vikings are usually the first examples that spring to mind. However, there are many other models of medieval Nordic combatants, and it is only through the combined influence of several historiographical traditions that the Viking has become the emblematic figure of these "warriors of the North". The latter are in fact a variant of the "men of the North", a concept that originated in the nineteenth century as a literal translation of the medieval notion of Nortmanni, referring specifically to the Scandinavian raiders who terrified the Western populations of the early Middle Ages with their warlike violence. In this way, the expression gradually led to the conflation of all peoples considered to be Nordic, according to a very vague conception of what this "North" might cover. In this "imaginary geography" that has developed over the centuries in the West, the "warriors of the North" take on a variety of meanings depending on the historical, political and ideological contexts in which they are used.
Lorsque l’on évoque les figures combattantes du Nord médiéval, les vikings sont généralement les premiers exemples qui viennent à l’esprit. Pourtant, il existe bien d’autres modèles de combattants nordiques médiévaux et ce n’est que sous l’influence combinée de plusieurs traditions historiographiques que le viking est devenu la figure emblématique de ces « guerriers du Nord ». Ces derniers se présentent en effet comme une variante des « hommes du Nord », concept qui naît au xixe siècle d’une traduction littérale de la notion médiévale de Nortmanni, désignant spécifiquement les pillards scandinaves qui terrifièrent les populations occidentales du haut Moyen Âge par leur violence guerrière. C’est ainsi que l’expression conduit à confondre progressivement tous les peuples considérés comme nordiques, selon une conception très vague de ce que ce « Nord » pourrait recouvrir. Dans cette « géographie imaginaire » qui se constitue au fil des siècles en Occident, les « guerriers du Nord » prennent alors des significations diverses en fonction des contextes historiques, politiques et idéologiques
