NEW DATA CONCERNING THE ANCIENT OCCUPATION OF THE SITE OF PELUSIUM

Premières données sur l’occupation ancienne du site de Péluse (la stratigraphie de Farama Ouest)

Résumé

NEW DATA CONCERNING THE ANCIENT OCCUPATION OF THE SITE OF PELUSIUM In the autumn of 1993, digging was continued in the sounding begun in autumn 1992 on the threatened site of Tell Farama West. The recent work was useful in clarifying the observations made during the first season, especially those concerning the two oldest of the five levels already recognized, numbers N4 and N5. Structures in situ begin to make their appearance. Level N4, characterized by an abundance of ceramic and metal objects can be dated to the 4th century B.C. N5, lying just above the underground water-table, was found to contain pottery of the Persian period, and more precisely of the 5th century B.C. No evidence of an older occupation, 6th century or Saïte could be identified. These dates accord well with the oldest literary evidence concerning the city of Pelusium (Herodotus and Skylax) but should not prejudice us against the possibility of an earlier occupation, now submerged and out of our reach.
