A new pottery workshop in Constantinople / Istanbul and new archaeometric results on Byzantine White Wares

The large-scale excavations carried out in Istanbul in the framework of the metro-Marmaray project were a unique opportunity to investigate the Byzantine and Ottoman capital. Among the mass of as yet unpublished material, kiln bars and a structure identified as a pottery kiln, found at the Vezneciler metro station, provide new evidence of pottery production in Contantinople/Istanbul. Although the associated repertoire is not clearly identified yet, chemical analysis of the kiln furniture already brings important results, thanks to comparative data previously in the Lyon laboratory database. It shows in a definitive way the Constantinopolitan origin of the most widely diffused Byzantine White Wares, “Glazed White Ware II”, which was previously assumed but never shown before
