Interferometric Angular Diameters, Linear Radii and Stellar Modeling

Résumé

Over the last few years, a new generation of long baseline interferometers has opened interesting opportunities for high accuracy measurements of the angular diameter of nearby stars. Combined with parallaxes, they provide linear photospheric radii with uncertainties down to sub-percent values. In this paper, I present how these radii can be used to constrain stellar evolutionary models. When the star is sufficiently resolved, the limb darkening also becomes measurable, giving access to the structure of the stellar atmosphere. Using the Hipparcos parallaxes and currently available interferometric instruments, we can today measure the radius of 450 stars with a relative accuracy better than 3%.
