Petite anthropologie du sourcil : Della Porta, Le Brun, Darwin
Résumé
The eyebrow, is not only a vestige of our ancestral animality. Humble though it is, it has multiple functions, both aesthetic and anthropological. On an individual scale, Della Porta’s physiognomic speculations show that it can reflect our soul and our deep temperament. At the group level, according to Le Brun’s « pathognomy », it facilitates social interactions by making visible our inner passions and passing emotions. Finally, on the level of the whole human species, the eyebrow is, according to Darwin, a universal communicator of affect, naturally selected over generations, which has helped contribute to the species’ ongoing successful adaptation and survival.
