Finding their Feet. Considerations on the Representations of Isolated Body Parts in the Ancient World and their Modern Reception
Faire des pieds et des mains
Résumé
Collectors of antiquities have developed since the early modern time a special interest in anatomical votives in terracotta discovered in sanctuaries of Central Italy. They considered these fragments of bodies as a special illustration of modelling in Antiquity, giving to these documents an ambiguous status, which invites to consider the actual link between these terracottas and other representations of isolated parts of bodies in the ancient world, especially those used as models in workshops.
