Research Efforts in Mobile Edge Network Environments
Résumé
Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) has emerged in recent years as a way to reduce data transmission, decrease service latency, and reduce the load on the core network. MEC is expected to play a significant role in future communications networks, especially in providing services for new applications that involve high mobility or require high reliability and low latency communications. Edge computing relies on other technologies to achieve the desired performance, including network softwarization technologies (e.g., software-defined networking (SDN), network functions virtualization (NVF), and network slicing). Edge computing also enables edge intelligence, by hosting artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) technologies, either to improve its own operation or to provide services to end users. Various MEC-related research efforts are underway in these areas as well as in the area of security and privacy in relation to MEC. This report provides an overview of some recent works in the area of MEC.
