Sustainable development (SD) aims to reconcile economic, environmental and social issues, which is a source of many oppositions and tensions. The social and solidary economy (SSE) does not aim to make a profit, but to respond to social needs not met by the market. Their meeting is not self-evident because neoliberalism also claims to unite the economy, the environment and the social, but through the market. The SSE must open up to SD and move towards a patrimonial management of nature as a common good. In Africa and in the so-called southern countries, it is a return to ancestral traditions, but in a renewed form.
