Is identity a functional property?
Résumé
Ruth Marcus defended the absolute notion of identity, in particular through her theorem about the necessity of identity. Critics of absolute identity have attempted to relativise the notion, with no great success. I here consider another possible view : functionalism about identity, the view , similar to one proposed about truth, that identity could be a functional concept. I reject this view, on the ground that it would make identity a kind of similarity. Identity is, and has to be absolute.
