Large-scale individual ESP instruction: interim report on ICT-based practices

Résumé

This article aims at exploring the potential of an experimental guided autonomy course to address current issues related to individualized instruction and the expansion of educational opportunities in English for specific purposes at university level. This course was designed from the ground up to allow 250 first-year (A2 level) STEM undergraduate students to reach a Threshold level. To do so, the course was first based on a theoretical model in second language acquisition. This model enabled to implement a twofold device composed of an online website and an individualized feedback generation system. Two target audiences of 250 learners who used this experimental prototype were followed longitudinally (between 2011 and 2013) in a Parisian university. This study allowed to collect and analyze various sets of data (students’ attendance, satisfaction and performance at the final exam). The results appear to be encouraging concerning the management-related dimension of the course. Further research is however needed to improve revision procedures for the teaching staff.
