• Fluctuation in experiencing VGE is due to conceptual, cognitive, and portrayal gaps. • The VGE representation impacts mostly the time needed by users to complete a task. • Spatial abilities strongly affect users' performance while manipulating a VGE. • Current participatory setups using 3D appear to hinder the potential of VGE.
