Buddhism and violence

Paolo Barbaro

Résumé

The entry analyzes how, along twenty-five centuries of history since its foundation, Buddhism has encountered and has merged with various and diverse cultures, religious and philosophical traditions; how it has been involved in political conflicts and how it has confronted historical contingencies; how it has been adopted and interpreted by various societies and translated in many languages and cultures, giving birth to a number of different and sometimes contrasting perspectives, attitudes and texts on violence.
