Development of motor planning for dexterity tasks in trisomy 21

We examinedthemacroscopicaspectsofmotorplanningintwomanualdexteritytasks,
comparingchildren,adolescents,andyoungadultswithtrisomy21(T21)withtypically
developingcontrolsfromadevelopmentalperspective.Weanalyzedtheorderinwhich
objects werepickedupfromatableduringtwomanualtasksoftheMovementAssessment
Battery forChildren(M-ABC).ParticipantswithT21werealwaysslowerthancontrols.
Task completiontimesdependedonthestrategyusedbyparticipantstogatherupthe
pegs orcoins.Astructuredstrategy,inwhichtheparticipantspickedtheitemsupmoving
methodicallyalongeachrow/column,contributedtorapidtaskcompletionbyyounger
children andparticipantswithT21.ThisstudyhighlightstheabilityofchildrenwithT21to
select andmaintainanefficientstrategythattakesaccountoftheirmotordifficulties.
DevelopmentaltrajectorieshelptoexplainT21functioninginthesedexteritytasks.
