Résumé

Male piglets are usually castrated to avoid boar taint of their meat and to prevent injuries provoked by their sexual behaviour when they reach sexual maturity. This husbandry practice has painful effect that last several days if done without efficient pain relief treatment. The present study tested six protocols combining anaesthetics and analgesics to alleviate pain in piglets during and after castration. Males from 72 litters were castrated under one of the following treatments, randomly assigned: (1) no pain relief; (2) intra-muscular meloxicam injection and general anaesthesia by inhalation of isoflurane; (3) meloxicam and intra-testicular injection of lidocaine 2%; (4) lidocaine and a magistral preparation of phytotherapy to reduce pain and stress orally given to piglets three days before and two days after castration; (5) lidocaine and phytotherapy orally given to the dams three days before and two days after castration of their suckling piglets; and (6) meloxicam, cold spray application on the scrotum prior surgical incision and Tri-Solfen® topical administration in the surgical wound. Five male piglets per litter were involved. The same treatments was applied to each piglets of a litter. During injections and castration, behavioural activity and vocalizations of the five piglets per litter were recorded. The plasma cortisol level of two piglets from the five was measured 30 minutes after castration. The behaviour characterizing pain of three other piglets was observed from castration to 48 h after by two trained observers blind to the treatment and having equally divided them. Piglet weight and surgical wound healing were monitored. The behaviours, cortisol rate and wound aspects are compared according to the protocols and considering associated co-factors such as litter with linear models. The results under acquisition will be presented and discussed. The feasibility of the most satisfactory protocol will be tested in commercial farms thereafter.
