On-farm evaluation of human-pig relationship: developing a multidisciplinary tool for diagnosis and training
Résumé
A positive human-animal relationship is essential for pig breeding. In the French RHAPORC (Human-animal relationship in pig farms) project (CasDAR 5620), a novel multidisciplinary approach is developed to evaluate the human-pig relationship on farm. It can be used for training and on-farm evaluation to improve a situation. The aim is to evaluate all factors affecting human-pig relationship, and propose advices when problems are highlighted. It consists in forms to be fill-in (https://www.rhaporc.ifip.asso.fr). Behavioural observations allow to evaluate pig reactions to human presence and handling. Thirty sows are observed in each farm and six pens of finishing pigs. We also observe the different actions humans use while interacting with their animals. A questionnaire using a sociological approach assesses the attitude of humans toward the animals, the perception of their health and the place of the human-pig relationship in work. The working environment is analysed (constraints for the humans and animals). Organisation of daily work between the different workers in the farm is also analysed in order to highlight possible tensions, tasks that are more difficult or less appreciated by each other. For each form, we propose a personalised report and advices based
on literature and expert knowledge, that can eventually be discussed with an advisor. The
system is currently being discussed with farmers, to evaluate its feasibility and relevance. It is also tested by teachers in agricultural schools to help them to sensitize future farmers to the importance of human-pig relationship, both for their own well-being and for animal welfare.
