Dynamic Modeling and simulation of frost formation on blast freezer heat exchanger

Résumé

The formation of frost on heat exchangers is a phenomenon that appears during specific operating conditions. The presence of frost often incurs a decrease in the amount of cooling performance, resulting in the need for defrost cycles. In this paper, we are interested in the conditions of deep (quick) freezing in industrial freezers characterized by very low temperature, high inlet air humidity and more complex evaporator geometries. A Modelica dynamic frost formation model, based on the energy and mass conservation equations, has been discretized using the finite volume method and simulated in the DYMOLA software to study the frost behavior and its impacts on a small quick freezing system operating at-35°C. The simulation results indicate the frost properties (thickness, conductivity, density, porosity) and system degradations trends (pressure drop, heat transfer rate, compressor behavior…) depending on different operating conditions.
