Résumé

Inadequate physical activity in young people is associated with several physical and mental health concerns. School programs are potentially viable existing network for promoting physical activity. In particular, cycling is a healthy and enjoyable mode of transport, whether it is work-related or as a leisure time activity. Riding a bicycle offers the possibility to sustain an appropriate level of physical activity, which consequently improves our physical and mental well-being and reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes and some cancers. In the meantime, it also promotes autonomy and, through contact with natural settings, mountainbiking might be a vector of environmental literacy. The present study therefore examined the efficacy of an intervention aimed at increasing pupils leisure-time activity, motivation, biking skill, physical literacy and environmental attitude in a particularly deprived area. The study adopted a cluster-randomized, waitlist control intervention design with randomization by class within a school with a high rate of student scholarship. The control group was composed of 16 pupils, the test group of 25 pupils. All children were in grade 5 (10-11 yo). In addition to the PE classes, every Monday morning, the test group had 4 hours of mountain biking lessons taught by a professional coach, first within the setting of the school, and then in the nearby forest. We measured their physical activity using accelerometers, physical literacy (dragon challenge), motivation for school and for biking, biking skills, attitude toward nature before and after the intervention in both groups. The results of this study will be available in early May and presented to the AIESEP congress in June 2021. The objective is to determine to which extent this specific program impacts childrens’ physical activity behaviour, motivation, skill, physical literacy and environmental attitudes.
