Investigation on the vibrational response of nano-objects studied by picosecond acoustic

Résumé

The constant race toward miniaturization leads to a continuously increasing interest to nano-objects. Moreover, the downsizing to the nanoscale leads to unique properties to those objects in comparison to their bulk counter-part due to confinment (e.g. optic, quantic or acoustic). In the acoustic domain, modification of the dispersion relations, which in turn impacts thermal or electronic properties, in nanorods (2D), nanowires (1D) or nanospheres (1D) is provoked by the confinment. More and more used as fundamental brick in the development of new devices (bio-sensors, fuel cells, ?), the study of nano-objects is crucial. If their size is the main interest, it is also the main difficulty to deal with when it is about their study. Laser ultrasonics is a technique allowing to carry on regardless this problem and to study the vibrational response of nano-objects which characteristic size of the order of several tens of nanometer. In this study, the vibrational response of nano-objects is investigated as it could lead to the mechanical properties of the medium or being used to develop imaging technique.
