Feeding behaviour of sows in gestation with precision feeding

Comportement alimentaire des truies en gestation recevant une alimentation de précision

Résumé

Simulations of precision feeding in which gestating sows were individually fed a daily mixture of two diets with different amino-acid contents (precision feeding, PF) indicated a reduction in protein intake, feed costs and environmental losses compared to sows fed a conventional single diet (conventional feeding, CF). Effects of adjusting the amino-acid supply on sows’ feeding behaviour (frequency of visits, time spent in the feeder) has not been reported yet. Thus, the objective of the present study was to compare the feeding behaviour of gestating sows fed either a PF or a CF strategy. The experimental trial included 131 gestations from 107 sows divided into the two feeding strategies regarding their parity and weight at insemination. Feed supply was similar for the two feeding strategies. At the end of the gestation, PF sows made more non-feeding visits to the feeder than the CF sows (4.4 vs 3.7 visits/d, respectively, P < 0 .01) and spent more daily time for non-feeding visits than CF sows (32.4 vs 29.7 min/d, respectively, P < 0.01). The feeding strategy had no effect on the number of feeding visits and on the time spent daily for feeding visits. Primiparous sows spent more time for feeding visits than multiparous sows (58.4 vs 51.7 min/d, respectively) and were the last to gain access to automatic feeders. The larger number of feeding visits per day began from the start of the new feeding day (set at 00:00). Feeding strategy had no effect on the order of entrance in the feeder or on automatic feeder preference. Nevertheless, sows had a personal preference for one of the two feeders in the room. In conclusion, the precision feeding strategy can be used to reduce lysine intake without influencing feeding behaviour, while reducing protein intake and feeding costs.
