The oceans' most powerful known internal waves-propagating disturbances of the background density stratification-are generated in the Luzon Strait, between the Pacific Ocean and the South China Sea. Locally, these waves impact marine life and ocean engineering, and globally they influence large-scale ocean circulation patterns.
