Assessment of Borderline Personality Disorder in Geriatric Institutions

This article proposes to clarify the diagnosis of borderline personality disorder in ageing. Indeed, the expression of borderline personality disorder in the elderly population differs significantly from its expression in middle-aged adults and its prevalence in institutions makes it the most common personality disorder. This cross-sectional study was based on 444 responses to a self-assessment questionnaire that were collected using the validated French form of the Inventory of Personality Organization (IPO) linked to Kernberg’s personality theory. The results show an effective alternative to the diagnosis of borderline personality disorder in ageing based only on DSM-5. This alternative provides a basis for distinguishing the IPO scores of people over 65 who are institutionalised or hospitalised as ‘normative’, ‘neurotic’ or ‘borderline’ personality types.
