Transformations of Integralist Catholicism under Benedict XV: Benigni’s Network after the Dissolution of La Sapinière

Nina Valbousquet

Résumé

Benedict XV’s pontificate was at the same time both a watershed and a disavowal for integralist Catholics, starting with the controversial figure of Umberto Benigni, founder of the secret anti-modernist organization Sodalitium Pianum. Looking closely at the relations and mutual perceptions between Pope Benedict XV and the group of French and Italian activists led by Benigni, this paper argues that the pontificate of Della Chiesa was a cornerstone in reforming integralist Catholicism even before the official dismissal of La Sapiniere in 1921. After the death of Pope Pius X, Benigni became marginalized and led a right-wing internal opposition against the new pontiff and his Secretary of State, Cardinal Gasparri. Beyond a mere anti-modernist opposition, the suspension of La Sapiniere in 1914-15 triggered a shift in Benigni’s activism towards taking a more political direction and going beyond his mere anti-modernist opposition. Disappointed by the Vatican’s lack of support, Benigni reorganized a network of social defence independently of the ecclesiastic hierarchy. This article further investigates post-war clashes between the Holy See and Benigni’s collaborators, such as those in Fede e Ragione and Father Salvien. Although these cases were actually distinct from the Sodalitium Pianum, Benedict XV’s curia still interpreted them as remnants of La Sapiniere.
