In the course of our research, we have asked ourselves how missionaries have evangelized the peoples over twenty centuries of history. Did they share no method, no instructions to apply? The discovery of missionary boards and treaties, proposing evangelizing advice, brought a new perspective to the beginning of answer. However, the comparison of these texts revealed the existence of a two-step pedagogy: integration
of the missionary in the culture, and the establishment of a pastoral inculturation. This essay attempts to retrace the formation of this pedagogy.
through twenty centuries, starting with the Apostle Paul and continuing with based on various treatises on evangelization. In 1659, theorized by Fide's propaganda instructions, it will be recommended by many popes at the beginning of the 20th century. In the preface, Claude Prudhomme, explains that "From the the first apostolic preaching, the first apostolic preaching, is set in motion. inculturation logic that is not simply a clever
adaptation to host societies, but an effort to think the Christian message from and through multiple cultures. And if the concept of inculturation has imposed itself only in the last third of the XXth century, it reports on an a concern that runs through the history of missions. »
Cet Essai, montre qu'il a existé des pédagogies missionnaires pour évangéliser. Elles jalonnent 20 siècles d'Histoire du christianisme. Le plus curieux est qu'elles présentent un substrat commun qui remonte à l'Apôtre Paul. Récupérées et formalisées par la Propaganda Fide, XVIIe siècle, elles deviennent les fondements d'une pédagogie désormais recommandée par Rome. Cette capitalisation des expériences missionnaires a abouti à l’émergence d’une pédagogie d’évangélisation qui a conservé une structure de fond identique qui s’articule en deux grandes étapes et de sous-étapes : 1) l’insertion culturelle avec l’oubli de soi, apprendre les langues et vivre selon leurs usages; 2) la pastorale d’inculturation qui voit la culture comme véhicule de l’Evangile, puis l’herméneutique culturelle et religieuse, enfin la création d’un clergé locale.
Au début du XIXe siècle, Rome et la Propaganda Fide redécouvrent ces textes qui sont alors publiés. Tout au long du XIXe siècle un certain nombre de Vicaires apostoliques de grandes congrégations missionnaires (Maristes, Pères du Saint-Esprit, Missions étrangères de Paris, Lazaristes et autres) s'appuient sur ces consignes pur adapter leur stratégie missionnaires aux milieux qu'ils évangélisent.
