Structural health monitoring of hollow cylinder using cross-correlation of ambient noise field

Résumé

This work is devoted to the Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) of hollow cylinders. To this end, the generated noise by fluid flow (liquid or gas) is exploited. First, a one-dimensional theoretical model is developed. This is based on the cross-correlation function. It is shown that the latter tends to the Green's function. A healthy, then a damaged structure are investigated. Second, an experimental device is set-up to validate the theory. It is based on a pumped water flowing in a tube. The experimental results show a good sensitivity to the damage even if the noise is not perfectly diffused. Furthermore, due to the phase change, the method is robust.
