FIND project: Underwater Connected Objects for Sustainable Fishing

Résumé

Known as “ghost net” lost, abandoned, or discarded fishing net in the ocean has received increasing international attention in the past decades. This phenomenon has a significant impact on the ocean ecosystem as well as on the fishing presence. On the one hand, ghost nets can produce economic losses to fishers when their profits get lost. On the other hand, lost nets are among the major contributors to ocean pollution. Their existence puts the lives of marine animals in danger. In this context, the FIND project aims to localize the fishing nets underwater using an acoustic communication system to find the nets when they get lost and avoid the creation of waste in the ocean. In this paper, we propose to present the underwater connected object of localization that has been developed and to focus our attention on the localization algorithm.
