Geomagnetic survey

Francois Leveque

Résumé

Geomagnetic prospecting consists of studying the local deformation of the Earth’s magnetic field produced by differences in the properties of surrounding materials. As fire heats the ground, which transforms the magnetic behaviour of the materials, it leaves an indelible magnetic imprint, the presence of which is revealed by a local deformation of the Earth’s magnetic field. The implementation of geomagnetic surveys in tropical rainforest is tedious because it is impossible, with current technology, to geolocate measurements while moving with centimetric accuracy. However, the information provided has no equivalent for the study of archaeological sites. This method is a promising transition step between the scale of the airborne LiDAR, which detects topographic artefacts, and the scale of excavations, which provide access to stratigraphic information but cannot systematically cover the entire site.
