« Les Grenouilles du Résident » : introduction datings of Litoria aurea (Lesson, 1826) (Hylidae) in New Caledonia and Wallis Island (Wallis and Futuna) by Europeans

Résumé

Recent data obtained from literature and from a Paris Natural History Museum collection register allows establishing a more precise and documented dating for the first introduction of the hylid frog Litoria aurea on some Pacific islands. Registers clearly indicate the existence of a specimen originating from New Caledonia donated to Paris collections in July 1863. On the other hand it is also explicitly mentioned in a published book that a French politician deliberately introduced the frog (most likely from New Caledonia) to Wallis Island around 1932. All those data now place New Caledonia as the first place of introduction of that frog outside Australia, few years before its introduction to New Zealand.
